Entertained in my youth by an old folk ditty about an evil sausage maker
ground to sausage in his own machine, and blessed with an older daughter
who years back convinced her horrified younger sibling that the best of
Winter Soups contained human toes and that "Pig Snout Pie" was a regular on
some menus, I couldn't pass over a brief article in the _Austin (TX)
'Merkin Stumps'um_ noting the ghastly passing of a Round Rock (nearby once
tiny town where the outlaw Sam Bass met his end) worker, swallowed by the
maw of a food grinder at the Michael Angelo Gourmet Food Company.

I understand they recovered some old tail surfaces
from under the ice in Greenland a few years ago. Much
older ones have been recovered from the Solnhofen
lithographic limestone quarries.

Funny, I remember the song as "Dunderbeck"

I must have led that song hundreds of times at scout summer camp in the
1970's.

well, the DigiTrad archive at www.mudcat.org has lyrics for both
versions. "Dunderbeck" seems to be more established, though, with a
first publication date of 1926. "Johnny Verbeck" seems to be a regional
variation. Where'd you go to Y-Camp, Mr. Hatunen?

That's how my Mom always sang it to us. (She's from St. Louis, and would
presumably have picked it up around the same time as Bob.) BTW, did any
of your interpret "all the neighbors, cats and dogs" the way I did--with
the comma, not the apostrophe?
Not me - I assume(d) that the cats and dogs belonged to the neighbors,
not that Johnny was making neighborly sausage.

DP2, "Johnny Rebeck" (1950s-80s)at nearby camp Val Verde, the local
Campfire Girls place on the Middle Bosque where all four of my sisters and
both daughters spent time. Up at Valley Mills at YCamp we sang hymns and
recited a Bible Verse every day...how "Jesus wept." became so well known,
but Camp Stewart at Hunt had its own complete liturgy of Camp Stewartish
songs (as did Waldemar and Mystic, the exclusinve haunts of wealthy
damsels).

Well, that'd be the right region based on the DigiTrad responsed, but
AFU responses seem to indicate a wider spread of Johnny Verbeck/Rebeck.

"Dunderbeck" scans better, though.

It has been $bignum years since I sang it, and I don't recall what we
sang. Looking at
http://www.altavista.com/web/res_text?amb=txt&kls=0&kgs=0&q=%2Bhow.could.you.be.so.mean+%2Bsausage+%2Bmachine&avkw=aapt
I see that various spellings of Johnny Verbeck predominate.
